The Ex-Collectibles are ornaments saved from the charity shop shelf. Once loved, now discarded, these objects have become obselete and are in need of a new lease of life.
As an artist with an intrigue into the world of objects, particularly those we choose to have in our homes, I decided to transform these figurines into functional items. The first range of objects are tableware, inspired by the Marvellous Tea Dance Company. Embodying a vintage feel and combining kitsch with macabre, a mis-matched collection of clown figurines are turned into shakers and cake stands.
I embrace the flaws in old objects, turning them into decorative details or structural elements. They are coated in glossy enamel or tactile flock, and finished down to the last detail, with polished silver or copper attachments.
As this range is based on the wonderful vintage events held by the Marvellous Tea Dance Company, cakes and decorations became a strong visual theme. Hundreds and Thousands, chocolate sprinkles and sugar set in resin are used adornments for the pieces.
These images show some of the prototypes and test pieces for the shakers created throughout the project. To experiment with the form I have cast the original in both earthernware and porcelain, testing out different coating and colour combinations.

As my final degree project these pieces will be exhibited at the Leeds College of Art and Design Degree Show, opening on the 19th June. I intend to continue the project, developing techniques and beginning new ranges, and I welcome any feedback, comments, and especially any unwanted ornaments ready to be transformed!
